Years ago, probably more than 10, I had a friend Nick who lived in South Jersey. He ran a guitar luthier shop out of a little shack/garage type of building in a small town. Washington something rings a bell. Anyway, back when I was building pedals, I had offered to build him a pedal in exchange to put together a parts guitar. I had ordered various parts and honestly didn't know what I was doing. The body was too big and the the neck pocket didn't fit quite right. It still doesn't to this day but we made it work. It bounced around from apartment to studio to workshop to practice space for a while and then sat in a gig bag for years…
In 2025, I took another look. I dusted off the gig bag that now laid stashed away in my basement and sanded the back of the neck as well as replacing the pick guard with a black one. It originally had this pick guard with a map of the US on it but I got tired of looking at it. I also sanded down the frets a bit to match my taste. the original frets were so high it just was killing my buzz and buzzing my strings.
Mods
These days I am modifying it and making it into an enjoyable, playable guitar.
One of the mods being:
- 7.25" radius bridge aka johnny marr bridge - just ordered these
- locking tuners - also just ordered these
- maybe take a router to the back and hollow out the inside a bit? its heavy af
- I want to explore putting some kind of weird pickup or midi / pedal integration into the guitar itself.
- Maybe a piezo pickup
- Shave off 0.25 - 0.3mm on each end of the saddles in order to use those other ones with more control if the 52.5mm radius bridge doesnt feel right.
